The NZ blueberry industry is growing rapidly. Maori blueberry collective, Miro has acquired the intellectual property rights to a range of blueberry varieties from Mountain Blue Orchards, a world wide-renowned, long-established and innovative Australian breeder.
This project will focus on understanding bloom retention on blueberries, this is a significant quantity factor for the customer.
This project will explore the reason for its loss in transit between orchard and packing facility and provide growers with options for its retention. Time lapse camera technology, temperature and humidity monitoring and techniques for reducing fruit movement will all be employed to reduce the impact of this quality loss.
We are looking for applicants that will become part of our small team for the 10 weeks.
We aim to hire an applicant that has interest in fruit physiology or engineering.
To be eligible for this Callaghan innovation R&D internship you must be studying, or have recently completed an undergraduate or post graduate degree in science, engineering or business at a NZ tertiary education institute; horticulture studies would be preferred.
The successful applicant will needs to provide their own transport; compensation will be provided for work related travel.
You will be required to write up a report and present it to all the stakeholders at the end of the placement. Part or of this presentation can also be utilised for fulfilling the academic required of your internship.
Start Afresh will pay $22.10 per hour for up to 400 hours of work. Your place of work is Mt Manganui, Tauranga and Te Teko.
